We left Enkhuizen today,
and boarded a train for Haarlem. Everything went smoothly, and we were able to drop off our bags at our AirBnB shortly after we arrived, where we also met a very cute and friendly cat.
We went into the Great Church of Saint Bavo, which was pretty amazing, especially considering it was built starting in the 14th century.
It had (at least) three organs, and some beautiful stained glass windows
After walking around the church, we found lunch at the Grand Café Brinkmann, where we were able to sit outside and watch the goings on in the area. Susan and I then visited a knitting shop, after which we were able to check into the AirBnB, and from there we headed over to the Molen De Adriaan
which is a functioning, traditional windmill. In fact, it’s a reproduction of the historic mill that had been there for centuries before burning down in 1932. It was 70 years before it was rebuilt, so it’s quite new today. They gave a great tour, informing us all about the various uses for mills in the Netherlands, and how they work.
We were able to climb up to the platform level where the miller would turn the mill as needed to face into the wind, and adjust or repair the wings. There were great views of the city from up there
There was a helpful sign to remind us that while it is safer to go down the stairs facing them, it would be faster and more fun to go down facing forwards
