Blizzard of 2011

Well that was fast! Two weeks and a day after the last blizzard of 2010 comes the first one of 2011. Working at home today, but still decided to brave the weather and get coffee at the Starbucks around the corner. Here are a few pictures from the walk. Mind you, the overnight snow was supposed to be only a few of the 12-16 inches we may get, but I’d guess that at least 6″ has fallen so far, and the road which was last plowed a little over an hour before these pictures were taken has 2+” additional already.

Blizzard of 2010

Yesterday morning we were greeted with a not unexpected dumping of snow. It began in earnest around sundown on Sunday, and snowed through the night. I went out to shovel this morning when it seemed to have stopped, but just as soon as I got started, the snow decided to make a second effort. It’s so hard to judge how much snow we received — some spots were blown bare by the wind, and some drifts were nearly two feet deep. The most surprising thing was when I moved my mom’s car, there were 6-8 inches of the white stuff underneath the entire car. No wonder it felt a little like it was floating when I backed it out of its spot. Usually the snow is just near the outside edge, but not with this storm. Anyway, I spend about 5 hours shoveling and, like the wind, blowing snow today. The wind was wicked at times, blowing the snow I was blowing back in my face. Ouch. One of the few times in my life I would have been happy to wear a balaclava.
